Origins
As a small boy I could often be found in my dad's workshop "playing" with saws, hammers, chisels, planes and whatever tools I could lay my hands on (my parents didn't seem too concerned about "accidents").
Always having been self-motivated to "have a go", mostly initially in my own flat, I started to tackle increasingly complex jobs, with my first bathroom refurbishment back in about 1988.
Many years ago, I would visit the local library to get all kinds of hints and tips on how to do, for example, basic plumbing work or basic electrical work. Even certain DIY stores would have leafets on how do certain jobs. And so as my knowledge and experience grew, so did the complexity of the jobs I tackled.
In 2007 the opportunity finally came to become self-employed working initially with an experienced builder where I gained a lot more practical knowledge, not just of how to do certain types of job, but also how houses "work" as a whole. I found myself having to manage and plan works in their entirety such a complete kitchen or bathroom refurbishment so as to finish with a reliable and, just as importantly, maintainable design.
I give full consideration to not just getting the job done as quickly as possible, but also things such as being able to easily replace taps in the future, easy access to all valves, using high reliability technologies when access will be impossible or very difficult to minimise the likelihood of leaks or component failures, end user safety and practical considerations that may not be immediately obvious.
